Talyone Erisnataveij Notei Eneirin

Also known as Talion (there's a reason why the 'y' has changed into a 'i', it has to do with pronunciation), Tal, Tali (family only) and 'that bloody Nirkavaena'. He's a stubborn little (literally 'little': he's only about 1m50 tall; don't make jokes about his height) Nirkavaena/Nirkanian Elf who likes mountains and snow way better than trees and who has little love for humans. Though still more love than the average Nirkavaena. At least he doesn't contemplate eating them. Not that Nirkavaena still eat humans, that was only in times of extreme famine. Besides, you never know what they've been rolling around in and it's bad for trading. He's a pretty powerful mage (actually gave up having a social/private life for a couple of decades in order to get where he is today. Then he met Aelin and learnt the hard way that having a private life can be good and that having to abandon it can be horrible (at one point Aelin broke up with him, but they got back together and have been a happy couple ever since). He also happens to love baking bread (he would watch his father baking bread when he was still a little child) and has an affinity for desserts. Currently he spends a lot of his time teaching children magic, but during times of war he goes out to battle the enemy. He would have loved to have children, but a childhood disease made him infertile (and Aelin is sterile as well), so he spoils the children of his clan instead. Erisnata is the name of his clan (which is named after a poisonous flower growing in the mountains). They live in the north-western part of the mountains. He is closest to being my muse because he's annoying enough to give me inspiration from hell <_<

Tal
Baseless

Half-naked Tal with his hair loose: a result from being inspired by a hair-only, no clothes dolling challenge. I did give him pants because being shirtless is already very embarassing for him (Nirkavaena modesty, especially in the Northern clans, means everything between armpit level and mid-thigh level must be covered). Hence why he isn't looking too happy. Anyway, this was a good opportunity to doll his tattoos and scars in more detail. And I finally got to show the huge amount of hair he has (he usually puts it up in a bun or braid).

Talyone
Baseless

Tal
Baseless

Finally a new doll of Talyone, this time showing how I imagine him to look: curly hair, his tattoos and his burn scars. The scars are a result of an unfortunate encouter with humans decades ago. While the scars will fade in time, he's no longer able to completely bend his pinkie. The tattoos on his wrists show a) which clan he was born in and b) that he's mated to Aelin. Unfortunately, their size here is too small to make out any details. The large tattoo on his arm is the Nirkavaena equivalent of a medal (in his case more than one). He's kind of a scholar, hence the book, seeing as he does spend some of his time writing books on magic. The background shows part of the mountain range where his people live. It's the view he has from his chamber's windows at the Nirkavaena Academy. The colours in the sky are the result of the huge amounts of magical energy surrounding the Academy.

Talyone in various stages of his life: childhood, puberty and adulthood. These are just quick portraits I had lying around unfinished, so I finally added the last bits of shading and details even though the dolls aren't very good. But this is the first doll of him with his 'real' hair: wavy/kinda curly/whatever you want to call it. He decided to cut his hair short when he was a teen, aka *poof*. He learnt from that experience.
Anyways, Tal was a pretty sweet, happy child, always following his elder brother around and thoroughly enjoying the position of youngest child of the family. As a teen he was a lot less happy, probably even worse than your average sulky teenager and way too obsessed by becoming a powerful mage (and thus letting his social life be taken over by studying). As an adult he kinda learnt to live again, is on the way of gaining the power he wanted and even more, and finding joy in teaching.

Scene
Base (for Talion only, Aelin is baseless. Site offline)

A big portrait of Tal because he's a vain little muse (though he doesn't want to admit it). I know that real faces don't have such sharp angles, but that's just how I draw Tal. The harsher lines seem to fit him. I only like this doll when I'm not looking too closely to it XD The right eye is too big compared to the left one and the hair isn't well shaded. But overall it seems to resemble the image I have of him in my mind, except less 'sadistic' looking. And his pupils are supposed to be that small: Nirkanian eyes are made for the night and twilight, so during day the pupils get really small. And as a counter effect of his eye colour (which is like that because of the magic running through his veins), Tal is even more easily blinded. Because of those eyes he's able to see through most illusions (unless they are extremely well made), but sometimes the cons weigh more than the pros. Oh, and that pink/red thing on is shoulder is a burn scar which runs over part of his back as well.

This nearly killed me, that sky took ages... I'm not too happy with the background, but it could be worse...
Anyway, this is a "little" scene showing Talion and Aelin waiting for a big battle against the army of the necromancers to begin. That's also why Aelin is holding the grey robe of a necromancer. The masks at the top of the background are those of necromancers too. That thing curving around Tal is Aereas, his Keeper, who protects him against mental attacks. He's supposed to look like that in this form, without any details and such. There are more details and symbols, but I guess no one would be interested in them XD

Talion

Talion
Base

Talion in formal wear (though it's now an old design)? No way! Someone must have forced him in it, the boy doesn't like robes at all. The background features his homeland, which means: mountains. I used this doll in my first layout. Even though I used to be pleased with this, I now don't like it at all XD

Talion in a tunic that Aelin gave to him. A quick portrait doll made to visualise his new hairstyle, only his hair is supposed to be in between curly and wavy.

Aelerin i Takkei

Mostly known as 'Aelin' or 'The General' (since he runs his place of work), he's a nine hundred eighty-two years old Guide (the spirits that guide the souls to the afterlife) that used to be a Nir i Gera/Geranian Elf (meaning he comes from the desert and from a matriarchal society). He's more of a pacifist, mainly because no wars mean a lot less work for him. And less work means more time to draw, sketch and paint! He's friendly to almost everyone, except his ex-wife who betrayed him with another man (not that bad) and disrespect him and his position in the tribe as its head priest (very bad). Now he's mated to Talion and 'lives' a fairly happy life though sometimes he misses his nomadic life in the desert. But at least he now gets to explore certain sides of life that are taboo in the Nir i Gera society.

Don't worry
My base

Aelin
Baseless

Finally I made an actual 'couple' doll of these two. It shows them saying goodbye to each other right before Tal is off to a big battle. Aelin is worried as heck, but Tal is assuring him everything will be fine. Which it won't be, because, while the Nirkavaena end up winning the battle, the casualities on their side are big (especially in Tal's division) and Tal ends up being badly hurt. Anyway, that whole story aside: I finally got around to designing Tal's battle outfit/uniform + accompanying war paint and a warmer set of clothes for Aelin (poor guy is used to desert temperatures, not the cold, wet Nirkavaena climate). And I got to show the height difference between them ^^

A quick doll of Aelin since it's been ages since I last dolled him. His skin got darker because I dolled Atijruë with darker skin and his seemed too light for a desert dwelling race. Basic design stayed the same, though he did at one point get a haircut. The older he gets, the more distance he puts between himself and the culture he grew up with. Anyway, he's currently annoyed by whatever the letter says. Because when he gets documents shoved into his hands, that usually doesn't mean anything good. Probably some Erkani got themselves killed on another planet and retrieving their souls hasn't gone well, so he ends up having to negotiate with whoever is responsible for the afterlife there :)

Zombies...
Base

A doll I used in my 2009 Halloween gift. It's Aelin actually doing a part of his job (eliminating necromancers) and the reason why he's doing his job: the zombie, or 'not quite dead thing' as the word 'zombie' doesn't exist in that world ^^ As a Guide, Aelin can easily turn the necromancers' 'creations' against them and he seems to be enjoying that here XD The trim on his cloak are actually symbols that the necromancers use to wrestle life back into the corpses. They were originally meant for Nera (one of the worlds' creators) and the Guides, but were 'adopted' by the necromancers for what they believed to be a good cause.
For this doll, I had to stray away from Aelin's usual colour scheme: I had the feeling that a bright orange sash, brighter red tunic and stark white hair would have kinda ruined the whole feel of this doll XD

I just couldn't resist dolling on this base as it reminded me of Aelin and his "pet zombie", which was the result of a necromancer's work that couldn't be immediately undone. Fortunately Aelin is something akin to dead too and can't really feel any of it. First time doing a doll like this and I probably won't make another again, but this idea stuck in my mind and I had to doll it. I don't really like the shading, but the little scythe is just adorable ^-^

Aelin
Baseless

Aelin
Base

An old layout doll I once forgot to upload. It's Aelin wearing the colours and robes of a priest, though he removed the traditional veil from his face. He's doing some priestly things, like calling upon the spirits to give him control over the desert's winds, which can be quite handy during the fight ^^ The doll itself isn't too bad (though the braid is way too windblown and just looks weird), but the background is just ick <_<

I think I'm getting addicted to making backgrounds...This one is kind of plain, but I didn't know what else to add to it. This is a doll of Aelin when he was a normal Geranian Elf, wearing the traditional clothes of his tribe and sitting in his homelands. And yes, in his society the men wear the veils that cover almost their entire faces, this is partly due to the fact that it's a matriarchal society and of course avoiding getting sand in your mouth and nose.

Rayneri Vrells'ka and Irnai Avrells'ka

Also known as Rayne and 'Treehugger', a close friend of Talion and married to Irnai. Vrells'ka is the name he got when he became a master mage and the apostrophy is there for a reason, it indicates a special sound, similar to the 'sch' in Dutch. He's an arachnophobic Erkani/Erkanian Elf that does like trees and whatever happens to flutter by. One of the few Elves that abandoned their homelands, he disagreed with how his society works and ran away. Other mages pursued him, trying to drag him back, but after he threatened to give away Erkani knowledge about the layout of interdimensional space to the Nirkavaena, they reached an understanding. Currently he has settled himself in a small human village near the Nirkavaena border, where he is the village healer. He's happily married to Irnai and together they adopted a human girl as their daughter.
Irnai is Rayne's beloved wife and yet another friend of Tal's. She's a Nirkavaena halfelf and generally quite nice, but with the typical Nirkavaena temper and stubbornness, though she has learned to put up with Rayne's lack of concentration. She's the pilot and mechanic of a magical airship. It used to be her 'child' as she's infertile and never expected to have children, but then she and Rayne adopted a little human girl and now she's a proud mother. She still spends a lot of time working on her airship though, because being a mother doesn't mean that you have to drop everthing.

IrnaiColourRace
Base

The eight doll for the colour race at The Limelight Cafe. I thought this palette would be easy, but it definitely turned out to be more challenging than I had expected. I think it's because there are no contrasting colours included. Anyway, Irnai is wearing a Nirkavaenan spring outfit (hence also the melting snow in the background) with the Nirkavaenan territories as the background.

IrnaiColourRace

IrnaiColourRace
Base

The seventh doll for the colour race at The Limelight Cafe. I originally had something else in mind for this palette, but then I saw some pretty Byzantine chlamys (I should have been studying, but couldn't resist the urge to take a look in one of my history of medieval fashion books. At least it was kinda related to the subject I was studying at the time, i.e. medieval church history >_<). Combined with the sudden urge to play around with lightsourcing, this is what came out of it. Irnai is stalking the streets at night, dressed in the Northern Recalian city dress. I actually like this ^^ Also, pixeling fire is incredibly fun XD

The sixth doll for the colour race at The Limelight Cafe. This one gave me a lot of trouble, the palette is something I would normally never use (not that it's bad, it's just a bit bright for my taste ^^') and it wasn't very inspiring for me. I'm just not a fan of bright pink and neon green XD Anyway, I guess this is one of the times Irnai had to go 'undercover' in a castle (hence the outfit, I guess the local population likes bright colours) and had expected to have to eventually fight her way out (which is why her skirts are torn up: extra mobility is always good).

The fifth doll for the colour race at The Limelight Cafe. Irnai doing one of the things she loves most: tinkering with stuff and getting her hands dirty while completely forgetting about time passing by. I didn't know what shoes to give her. I usually doll her wearing boots, but in this situation she would go for less restricting, cooler shoes.

The fourth doll for the colour race at The Limelight Cafe. Waking up after a battle might be good, but it isn't much fun. Especially not when you're having a bad headache and don't even know where you are or why you're wearing a purple-yellow monstrosity of a nightdress. In short: Irnai would never wear this of her own free will XD

IrnaiColourRace

The third doll for the colour race at The Limelight Cafe. I was trying out a more stylised base with an enormous head. It's definitely not my favourite style of base to work on, but it was a nice challenge. Anyway, this is a version of her wedding dress (which you can see below), redesigned a little bit and the colours adapted to the palette I had to use. A friend with Influence and Connections (aka Talyone) gave her the dress as a gift for her help. She certainly wouldn't be able to afford such a fancy dress on her own.

Second doll for the colour race at The Limelight Cafe This palette reminded me of the Erkanian race and culture Rayne used to belong to. So now Irnai is wearing their traditional clothing (except for the veil, she drew the line at the veil) and she's not happy about it. Neither her husband or she actually like the culture..

RayneHomelands
Baseless

First doll for the colour race at The Limelight Cafe, in which we have to use a given palette of four colours. This particular palette reminded me of military uniforms, so I just went with that idea.

Part two of the Homelands series. This time featuring Rayne in his village of birth, somewhere in the midst of jungle. It got raided by the Erkanian Academy (that explains the skull) when he was a small child, but before he was forced to go to the Academy. Once in a while he returns to the ruins to remember his past and to be reminded why he despises the Academy. It's one of the few times he can really be calm.
The lighter bits on the left side of his face are scars, they are the reason why he's blind on that side of his face. The only thing I really like about this doll are the plants in the background and the skull, it's the first one I've ever pixeled, or drawn for that matter. The rock is just bad, but after tons of editing I gave up on trying to fix it -_-

Irnai
Baseless

Irnai
Base (site offline) Reshaded by me.

Part one of a series I'm planning to make featuring my characters in their homelands. This is Irnai when she still was a friendly farmers' daughter and lived in a peaceful little village with her first husband. Unfortunately her husband got killed by soldiers of the local lord and she lost their unborn child. After this she wanted revenge (and more rights for women due to the villagers' reaction to her becoming a widow) and went to the big city where she met members of an idealistic organisation which was supposedly exterminated in a civil war. She joined them and over the years learnt how to fight, read and write properly and eventually met her current husband, Rayne.
I really like the colours in this doll, I had lots of fun with the palettes. The background isn't too bad either in my opinion, I just had to put mountains in XD The sky is one of the best of that kind of skies I've ever pixeled, I'm quite happy with it.

When I saw this base, I just had to doll Irnai on it. Not too happy with the doll itself, but I like the base edit. The hair isn't too bad, and I kinda like the broken spear, but that's all.

Rayne and Irnai
Base

Irnai
Base

A doll of Rayne with his wife, Irnai. I'm quite proud of it, I had to shade the entire base and it was the first time I did a side view, but I think it all came out allright. I had to save it as a .PNG because some colours disappeared when I saved it as a .GIF.

My second try at preps. From left to right: casual, formal and nightwear. I like the formal one a lot and I had lots of fun with editing the faces.

Deities, Immortals and Spirits

Enei
Base

Gas'Turil
Base

A divine (well, actually they are above the gods) being driven by the instinct of creating, often called Enei, though that's not the correct name. They are creator of the beginning of the universe and time. This is one of their physical forms (no form they created would be able to handle their spirit, so they let their spirit melt together with an unborn baby's one), they took one because they were bored after the universe evolved into a world of life. They then decided to create magic and began visiting planets, offering the gift of magic to all races. Some declined, thinking that it was below them, some accepted, but forgot the art of magic. Now there are few races that still practise magic in its old form, the Nirkavaena are one of those races.
I'm not too proud of this doll, but I like the flow of it. I took the lazy way out to make the gradient because I was tired working on it.

While Neri (see below) isn't evil, this follower of his is. He used to be a Nirkanian (like Talion), but was banished after committing a serious crime and became a slaver (which is considered as "evil" in Nirkanian society). He died during a battle, but was made into a Guide by Neri, who then still had some control over the Neranian worlds. He already was a powerful mage during his life, but with the limitations of life gone, no one could stop him. He killed the Guide who was in control over the Army of the Dead and started to conquer the world, leaving nothing but destruction and enslaved people in his wake. He was finally destroyed by an alliance between the different mages of the world, but killed many before he fell.

Neri
Base

Aereas
Base (site offline)

Neri, he who could be considered as evil, in his human form. His sister and he were the two main gods of the Neranian worlds and they had agreed that each would get half of these worlds to rule over. However his sister did not stick to this agreement and so he got a bit angry and tried to take the worlds over by force. He got locked away in a inter dimensional space by the combined might of his sister and her servants.
This doll took ages to make, but it was worth the time I think. I especially like his armour and the little planetary system in his hand especially.

Aereas, shape changing spririt that takes on the form of a white rabbit. Because what better way to annoy a though Elf by accompaning him shaped as a cute, little bunny? He's Talion's Keeper (a spirit that protects the barrier-less minds of Elves) and tends to act a bit like a chaperone, much to Tal's amusement.
A little doll to put down his 'human form'. I guess Talion forced him to wear some kind of clothes as rabbits don't generally need clothes. I love the shading on him and the little carrot, though he likes cabbage better.

Other Characters

Atijruë Music
Baseless

Rayeena Sleepwear
Baseless

Like the past couple of dolls, this is a mock entry for the second round (music and dance). While discussing the pageant and this particular round with Artzygrrl (the creator of the pageant) I remembered music classes in primary school, during which one child would get to play the triangle (i.e. hit it once in a while. I swear I do realise that actually playing the triangle is more than that). This led to me picturing a noble, fancy dressed Elf annoyedly playing the triangle. And since I don't think Atijrue is particularly musical or too fond of dancing, I decided to go with it. So here she is, not too happy about having to play a musical instrument. Even if she just has to hit it a couple of times, she would much rather be doing something else.
Costume-wise: she's dressed for a formal ceremony to thank the desert spirits held by the tribe. No out-siders are allowed in, which is why it's different from the formal outfit you see a glimpse of in the first round's portrait. The blue and purple fabrics show she's very much in power. Only the leader of a tribe is allowed to wear these two colours together (priests are allowed to wear blue, though of a different hue), let alone wear entire robes made out of them.

Yet another mock entry for MDF. This time the theme was 'sleepwear/sudden and unexpected awakening'. Rayeena would just wear an old tunic instead of something particularly designed for sleeping. I had quite a bit of fun drawing all the hair and the scars. I tried to make those look like they were of varying age: some fresh, others old and fading. Since she's a warrior she would have plenty of them. The dagger is based on a pesh-kabz, which explains the shape of it.

Rayeena Dance
Baseless

Atijruë
Baseless

A mock entry for round 2 of MDF. This time the theme was music and dance. I decided to doll Rayeena doing a ceremonial dance that's used in the memorial service for the many victims of the Kenoi i Tirias, a great war in which the Nirkavaena were almost wiped out. She's wearing a slightly more elaborate version of the traditional mourning attire, including the facepaint and a wreath and bouquet of flowers associated with death and funeral rites.

Another mock entry for Miss Doll Fantasy. She's another character of mine, Atijrue, head of a desert tribe and Aelin's ex-wife. She's a wonderful leader who has brought a lot of glory to her tribe, but not that much of a wonderful person. The portrait shows formal wear, the full body travel wear worn while travelling to a country with a temperate climate. She's the only person in her tribe who's allowed to wear deep purple clothes. The blue clothes are also a show of power.
The text says:
Etaeleorijs (the name of the desert), Atijrue e Tarael (her full name).

Rayeena
Baseless

Rantea
Base

A mock entry for the Miss Doll Fantasy pageant I'm helping judge. It's a doll of Talyone's (see above) big sister, Rayeenatei (or Rayeena in short). She's a master warrior who does not like humans at all (after all, they're noisy, immoral, stupid and, according to Nan, don't even taste too well...), hence the expressions. The full body shows her travel wear, the portrait depicts formal wear. The scarf around her shoulders is multifunctional: it can be used as protection against cold and rain, but also as protection against the sun, which is equally important for her. The full body's facepaint shows that she's not on any official business and that her leaders aren't accountable for whatever she does while travelling.
The text says:
Rayeenatei Erisnataveij, Master Urilione; Urileij (the Nirkavaena homelands, which basically consist of a mountain range and adjoining strips of coast).

A quick little doll of Rantea when she was still a young noble woman with some unusual ideas. That's what you get when your father's domain is close to a completely different society. Anyway, she's wearing lots of layers since she lives in a northern region. The colours and patterns are a tell-tale sign of nobility in her nation. Over the top? Yes. Weird colour combinations? Yes. Fashion isn't always logical, elegant or beautiful, even in fantasy countries ;)

Roderick
Baseless

Rantea
Base (site offline)

Third in my Homelands series, this time depicting Roderick, the leader of Sector 829. He originally came from Recalian, but deserted its army and fled to the Aranian continent. I'm not quite decided on his age and past yet, either he is a simple human or a not so simple ghost. With the latter option, the contents of that little bag would be quite gruesome ^^' Anyway, since he's now quite an important member of a political organisation working on overthrowing the government, the battle sometimes threatens to tear him apart as the organisation he is now fighting for, supports Recalian's arch-enemy. And with Recalian losing it's grip on that continent, Roderick sees how the culture he was born in is slowly fading away.

Rantea, leader of a revolutionary movement in a fantasy world of mine. Quite an interesting character, some kind of scientist who fights for democracy and equality. She also stabbed her friend in the back for those ideals, only to get her eye removed by that friend during a civil war. It's a long and complicated story, but I like this character.
This doll was made for an alter ego contest at Silver System. I chose to doll her instead of some other alter ego, because I hadn't made a decent doll of her yet. I like her clothing design and the shading. It looks almost completely like how I then imagined her to be.
